The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organization established in 1993 that promotes responsible management of the world's forests. FSC certification is the gold standard for ensuring wood and paper products come from well-managed forests.
FSC certification ensures:
- Forests are managed to protect biodiversity and ecosystems
- Indigenous peoples' and workers' rights are respected
- Forest management maintains economic viability
- No conversion of natural forests to plantations
- No use of hazardous chemicals
There are three types of FSC labels:
- FSC 100%: Made entirely from FSC-certified forests
- FSC Mix: Mix of FSC-certified and controlled wood
- FSC Recycled: Made from 100% recycled materials
For furniture shoppers, FSC certification provides assurance that solid wood products support sustainable forestry rather than contributing to deforestation.
