Bamboo

A fast-growing grass used in textiles, flooring, and products - though processing methods vary widely in their environmental impact.

Bamboo is a fast-growing grass that has gained popularity as an eco-friendly material. It grows quickly without pesticides, regenerates from its roots, and absorbs more CO2 than many trees. However, how bamboo is processed matters significantly.

Bamboo products fall into several categories:

**Bamboo Textiles:**

  • Bamboo viscose/rayon: Most common, uses chemical processing similar to other rayon. The chemicals can be recycled in closed-loop systems (better) or released as pollution (worse).
  • Bamboo lyocell: Uses a more environmentally friendly closed-loop process
  • Mechanically processed bamboo linen: Rare but most natural, requires no chemicals

**Solid Bamboo Products:**

  • Bamboo flooring, cutting boards, and furniture use bamboo in its natural form
  • Look for formaldehyde-free adhesives in laminated products

When shopping for bamboo:

  • Look for OEKO-TEX certification to ensure finished textiles are free from harmful substances
  • Ask about processing methods if possible
  • Consider that bamboo grown far from where it's sold has transportation impact
